From 1995 through 1997 Ferrari produced its 50th anniversary production model, the f50 Silver. Only 349 of the Ferrari f50 Silver’s were produced. The f50 Silver is a mid-engine, rear wheel drive automobile that is powered by a 60 valve, V12, 4.7L monster of an engine. This engine is connected to a smooth shifting 6-speed transmission. The car sprints from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. It covers the 1/4 mile in an awe inspiring 12.1 seconds at speeds of 123.0 mph. The top speed of 202 mph will thrill anyone with a pulse. The last of the 349 Ferrari f50 Silver’s was produced in July, 1997 at the Maranello, Italy production facility.
Enzo Ferrari started working in the automobile field shortly after WWI. He began with CMN then moved to Alfa Romeo in the early 1920’s. He began as a race car driver and designer. He founded the Scuderia Ferrari racing team, on behalf of Alfa Romeo, in 1929. He left Alfa Romeo and started a small parts company. During WWII he launched what would become Ferrari S.p.A. At first the company concentrated on racing cars, but in 1947 added production sports cars. Enzo soon found that the sports cars were necessary to pay the bills for his racing endeavors. In the 1970’s dwindling demand for the sports cars caused the partial sale of the company to Fiat. After his death Fiat acquired a 90% interest in Ferrari S.p.A.
Ferrari has had a long standing relationship with the world of racing, with a high profile on the Formula 1 circuit. The Scuderia Ferrari racing ream has enjoyed great success in Formula 1 for five decades. Enzo Ferrari was in full control of the racing division until his death, at the age of 90, in 1988.
The Ferrari f50 Silver is one of the most carefully crafted production Ferrari’s in the history of the company. In order to celebrate the history and great influence of the company and its founder, Enzo Ferrari, a fast, sexy machine was needed to be produced. While racing cars at Ravenna, for Alfa Romeo, in 1923, Enzo Ferrari acquired the Prancing Horse badge that has come to symbolize his company. The emblem had adorned the fuselage of the Italian WWI flying ace Francesco Baracca. Baracca’s mother, the Countess Paolina, gave Ferrari the very emblem that had been removed from the wreckage of the ace’s airplane. It was not used on a racing machine until 1932. The Ferrari logo that is used tody is known as the “Cavallino Rampante”. It is a bold yellow background with a black prancing stallion. The letters S.F., for Scuderia Ferrari, Enzo’s first racing venture, and the green, white, and red stripes of the Italian flag are usually at the top of the emblem.
Enzo Ferrari made some minute changes to the basics of Francesco Baracca’s emblem. He changed the color of the horse from red to black, then chose the background color because it is the color of the city of Modena where Scuderia Ferrari was based. Lastly, he pointed the stallions tail into the air instead of retaining the downward turn. The prancing horse has been used in different variations by Porsche, Fabio Taglioni on his Ducati motorbikes, and Avanti of Austria. The “Cavallino Rampante” is a trademark of Ferrari; however, a few cities and companies still use variations as their emblems. Everyone can recognize the Ferrari logo when they see it. The cars and the logo have become a part of our culture.
The Ferrari logo has been licensed for many uses. Most of these are for merchandising, marketing, and accessories. Enzo Ferrari introduced the world to his “Cavallino Rampante”, the Prancing Horse, in 1932. Since then it has graced the cars of the Scuderia Ferrari team for the better part of a century. No other symbol embodies the spirit and desire that is racing than the Ferrari logo. No other man and racing team embodies a sport more than Enzo Ferrari and Scuderia Ferrari.
