Ferrari Autos
There are some cars whose very names illicit a magical reverence from anyone who hears them. The automaker Ferrari is one of those names. There are many reasons for the awe that Ferrari inspires in us: the companies history, the man who started it all, and the Ferrari automakers vast influence on the world of racing.
The influence of “Commendatore” Enzo Anselmo Ferrari is indisputable. He was an Italian driver, designer, and founder of the Scuderia Ferrari Grand Prix racing team. This led to the founding of the Ferrari automaker. A man who came from humble beginnings, he overcame poverty and little education to found one of the best known automakers in the world. His career in racing and automobile design began in 1919 with a small firm named CMN. Shortly after that he joined Alfa Romeo, where he enjoyed real racing success. While racing in 1923 he acquired the Prancing Horse badge which had decorated the airplane of Francesco Baracca. Baracca was Italy’s leading WWI ace. In 1929 he started Scuderia Ferrari as a racing team for Alfa Romeo. He continued racing until the birth of his son in 1932. The Scuderia team was very unsuccessful. He left the team, and the employ of Alfa Romeo, in 1937. He started a small parts supply company, but did not launch what would become Ferrari S.p.A until 1947. Ferrari has participated in the Formula 1 World Championship since its inception in 1950. Their first victory came in 1951 and they won their first championship in the 1952-1953 season. Racing was the company’s main focus. The making of production sports cars was just a way to finance the race team. Because of dwindling demand and a lack of financing, Enzo Ferrari was forced to sell a portion of his company to Fiat. In 1988 Fiat acquired a total of 90% of the company. Ford Motor Company had been Enzo’s original choice for partner, but he backed out of negotiations at the last minute. He stepped down as chairman in 1971, but he still wielded vast influence with the company until his death. In 1988, at the age of 90, Mr. Ferrari passed away.
You can not say Enzo Ferrari without thinking of racing and sleek, sexy cars. A man of humble ambition, he burned to fulfill his dreams of racing and designing race cars. Launching the Ferrari automaker was the culmination of those dreams. As a fitting tribute, the Ferrari racing team won the Italian Grand Prix just a few short weeks after his passing. Laid to rest with dozens of honorary degrees and national honors, he was posthumously inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1994. To this day you can not hear “Ferrari” without mentally paying tribute to this legendary figure.
